In 1998, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) developed a GREEN Building Rating System to provide standards for environmentally sustainable construction. These standards are known as LEED and provide environmental guidelines for new building construction, renovation, commercial interiors and existing facilities.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is an open and transparent process where the technical criteria proposed by LEED committees are publically reviewed for approval by more than 10,000 membership organizations that currently constitute the USGBC.

In the past 20 years, LEED has grown from one standard for new construction to a comprehensive system of six interrelated standards covering all aspects of the development and construction process. The LEED rating system addresses six major areas:

1. Sustainable sites
2. Water efficiency
3. Energy and atmosphere
4. Materials and resources
5. Indoor environmental quality
6. Innovation and design process


Interior Architectural and ADA compliant signs are an intricate design element in any facility. Kroy Sign Systems is committed to supporting environmental management through conscious material and energy utilization throughout the manufacturing, assembly, finishing and packaging process.

Scrap generated during the manufacturing process, including paper, films, plastics and aluminum, are sorted and recycled. Production and Administrative computer and peripheral systems purchased are refurbished units, where feasible.

Kroy Sign’s proprietary injection molded sign products contain up to 20% reground plastic molded products, diverting scrap plastic away from the solid waste stream.

Kroy Sign’s ADA Photopolymer Signs are manufactured using Nova Polymers’ NovAcryl PT Series photopolymer. NovAcryl is the greenest and most versatile line of signage photopolymers ever introduced. The clear PETG sign base of NovAcryl contains a minimum of 40% post-industrial recycled content. Photopolymer effluent is 100% biodegradable, processed in plain tap water and has no VOC emissions. LEED contributors of NovAcryl include Materials and Resources (MR) Credit 4, Recycled Content, Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Credit 4.1, Low-Emitting Materials -Adhesives and Sealants and Innovation in Design (ID) Credit 1.


Kroy Sign Systems adheres to stringent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Maricopa County Air Quality requirements. Specialized High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) paint applicators are utilized to achieve superior color coatings with minimum overspray and waste.

Kroy Sign Systems’ products are finished with Matthews Paint products which contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) levels at or below the requirements of the USGBC’s Green Seal GS-11. This guideline is referenced in IEQ credit 4.2, a credit realized primarily by choosing and using low emission architectural coatings on interior surfaces during construction. Matthews topcoats and clearcoats, as well as select primers and additives, are compliant with the National Architectural Industrial Maintenance (AIM) rule, Federal Register 40 CFR Part 59.
